There are several different types of horse races. These include the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Santa Anita Handicap. Each of these races has its own unique requirements. The first place finisher gets a certain amount of prize money, while second place and third place finishers are usually awarded less.
Preakness Stakes
The Preakness Stakes horse race has a rich history. First run in 1909, it has been a staple of American horse racing. Since then, it has grown in purse value and popularity. Today, the purse is worth $1.5 million, an increase of more than 200% since its start of $2,050. Since 1931, the Preakness has been held on a Saturday afternoon. Previously, the Preakness was held on any day except Sunday.
The Preakness Stakes is the second leg of the Triple Crown and is held on the third Saturday of May. It is preceded by the Kentucky Derby and follows the Belmont Stakes. While a classic race, the Preakness is also a social event, especially for the younger crowd. During the race, fans and racegoers gather in the infield for an infield party.
Belmont Stakes
The Belmont Stakes is an important horse race, part of the Triple Crown. This year, it will be run on Saturday, June 11. You can watch the race online, or upload pictures from the race course using the hashtag #BelmontStakes. If you’re not able to watch the race live, you can also watch highlights online. Before the race, it’s a good idea to educate yourself about the history of the race. In 1993, Julie Krone became the first woman to win a Triple Crown race, and in 2004, the race had the highest television audience since 1977.
The Belmont Stakes has a rich history, and has been contested for nearly two centuries. The race was first run in 1853, and was won by two different racehorses. It was named for the financier August Belmont, who was involved in horse racing and society in New York.
Kentucky Derby
The 148th Kentucky Derby horse race did not disappoint. Although five horses had five to eight-to-one odds, only Rich Strike could take home the coveted trophy. The longshot rushed past his competitors and finished in first place. Zandon and White Abarrio are second and third, respectively. Mo (13-1) rounds out the top five.
The Kentucky Derby is an iconic race in American sports, and the race is broadcast on television on NBC. Its coverage has averaged over 14 million viewers since 2008, and is expected to top 15 million by 2021. NBC’s coverage of the race has become increasingly popular over the years, with nearly fifteen million viewers tuning in during the race. Due to pandemic reasons, however, the Kentucky Derby will be held in September 2020 instead of May. If you’re planning on watching the race online, you’ll want to download the NBC Sports App.
Santa Anita Handicap
The Santa Anita Handicap is a legendary horse race that has produced dozens of famous jockeys and horses. The purse for the race is $100,000, which is an incredible amount for a horse race. The race is also known as the “Hundred-Grander” or “Big ‘Cap.”
A field of eight older horses is set to contest this Grade I race. Express Train of C R K Stable is expected to be the favorite. The field is worth $650,000.
King’s Plates
The Queen’s Plate is Canada’s oldest Thoroughbred horse race. It dates back to 1860 and is the oldest continuously-run horse race in North America. It is run over one and a half miles and is open to three-year-old Thoroughbred horses that were foaled in Canada.
Originally, the King’s Plate was for six-year-old horses carrying 168 pounds. Then, in 1751, four-year-olds were allowed to participate. In 1752, the weight limit was raised to 140 pounds. This race continues today as one of the most prestigious horse races in the world.
