The Basics of Domino

domino

What is domino? The game is a tile-based family of games. These tiles have square ends with the number of spots on each. The purpose of the game is to match the number of spots on each tile to the number of dominos in the game. The object is to match as many pairs as possible without losing any of your pieces. To win, you need to cover all the spots on the board, and try to avoid letting the opponent’s tiles fall.

Origins

The game of domino is believed to have originated in France, perhaps brought to England by French prisoners of war. It spread from France to Britain and eventually to the American continent. The game is played with a set of dominoes and involves constructing a set of enclosed spaces known as ‘cells’. Each cell has an area equal to one-half of a domino tile. If two players are able to create the same number of cells, they win.

Types

There are two types of domino games: singles and doubles. Singles and doubles are joined to the line of play either lengthwise or crosswise. The spinner is played lengthwise. The game can be played with a single tile or with a pair of doubles. A player has a double when all of his tiles are joined together in a row. If he is able to place a single tile on both ends, he has a double.

Variations

The most basic variation of dominoes is played between two players. In this game, players take turns drawing seven tiles from a double-six set of 28 tiles. During play, players try to extend the line of play by picking up tiles from the sides of the line. The player with the highest score wins the hand, unless the other player draws a double. The player with fewer tiles then his opponent takes his turn and draws from the remaining tiles.

Rules

The Rules of Domino are comparatively simple. The object of the game is to eliminate as many tiles from your opponent’s hand as possible. Players start by laying down a base of three or four dominoes and then place dominos on it. The goal is to make cells with at least one domino tile in them, and score points for each cell. The players must only leave dominos whose numbers match both ends of the playing board. If the opponent has more tiles than dominoes, the game is over.

Variations of domino

There are several variations of the classic game of dominoes. Some of these variants are the race to 100, where the first person to play all dominoes wins. Other variations involve a player playing a specific number of dominoes without scoring, or the highest score at the end of a series. All variations of domino are equally enjoyable and can be enjoyed by everyone. But, before we discuss the most popular varieties, let’s first define what a domino is.
